Director Hou to Head PIFF Film School

Taiwanese director Hou Hsiao Hsien will head the Asia Film Academy (AFA), a film workshop that the Pusan International Film Festival (PIFF) has organized to nurture newcomers.

The organizing committee for the annual festival yesterday said that Hou will also teach 28 promising young new Asian filmmakers at the school, which has been formed to commemorate the 10th anniversary of PIFF this year.

Three other directors _ Thailand's Nonzee Nimibutr, celebrated cinematographer Yu Likwai and Korea's Park Gi-yong _ will be among the teaching staff.

The AFA workshop will have two sessions, one during Sept. 24-30 in Seoul and the other on Oct. 1-14 in Pusan.

The application process will close on July 31. Selected participants will also benefit from scholarships, including a free long-term training program and financial support for filmmaking.
