Domestic Film Market Share Exceeds 50 % for 3rd Consecutive Year

The public is continuing to lend their support to domestic films. According to a survey conducted by CJ CGV from Jan. 1 to Dec. 11 this year, the market share of domestic films was found to have exceeded 50 percent for the third year in a row. The number of moviegoers has also exceeded 100 million nationwide for the fourth straight year.

The CJ CGV's survey released on Dec. 13 shows that domestic films' market share was 59.1 percent nationwide, with the domestic market share in Seoul being 54.6 percent.

As it recorded a 7.4 percent decrease year-on-year during the first half of the year, the market share of domestic films was expected to spiral downward this year. But after August, it showed a rapid rising trend due to strong performances by box-office hits such as "Welcome to Dongmakgol", "Marrying the Mafia II", and "You are my Sunshine!" The 59.1 percent nationwide market share is a little lower than the 59.3 percent established in 2004, but higher than 2003's 53.7 percent.

The total number of moviegoers is expected to exceed 140 million this year, a 30-year high.

"Welcome to Dongmakgol", directed by Bae Jong, topped the box-office chart in 2005 with 8 million viewers. It is followed by "Marrying the Mafia II" (5.66 million viewers), "Marathon" (5.18 million viewers), "Another Public Enemy" - "Another Public Enemy" (3.91 million viewers), and "Sympathy for Lady Vengeance" (3.56 million viewers).

"Mr. & Mrs. Smith", the top box-office foreign hit film, ranked sixth with 3.54 million viewers, followed by "The Island" with 3.52 million viewers.

Only six foreign films were ranked among the list of top 20 box-office hits. All six foreign films were American movies.

In terms of standings for film distribution agencies, ShowBox topped the chart with three of its films occupying the top three spots. Five films distributed by CJ Entertainment were ranked among the top 20 box-office hit films, making the company the most successful film distribution agency overall. In terms of standings for foreign film distribution agencies, Warner Brothers ranked first by successfully distributing three films to the Korean market.
