Dong-A Ilbo submits application to start TV channel

The Dong-A Ilbo submitted Wednesday a general TV programming business plan to the Korea Communications Commission to start the tentatively named "Channel A".

A Dong-A-led consortium will be headed by Ahn Kuk-jung, the head of the daily`s Broadcasting Promotion Committee and a former president and vice chairman of SBS.

Dong-A submitted the application spanning 200 pages at 2 p.m., and will submit additional documents by Wednesday next week, the deadline for final documents.

Having dedicated itself to media, education and cultural content over the past 90 years, Dong-A is the largest shareholder of the consortium, which comprises corporate and individual shareholders across a number of sectors, sizes and regions.

Fellow Korean dailies Chosun Ilbo, JoongAng Ilbo, Maeil Business Newspaper and Hankook Gyeongjae (Korean Economy) as well as Taekwang Group also submitted applications for general programming.

In the media sector, Yonhap News, Money Today, Seoul Shinmun, STV, CBS, eTomato and Herald Media submitted business plans.

The Korea Communications Commission will choose new channel operators by year`s end.
