Drama 'Hwangjin-i' makes strong start

The first episode of "Hwangjin-i", a historical drama by broadcaster KBS, garnered a viewing rate of 20.1 percent in its debut Wednesday, according to a survey by TNS Media Korea.

The primetime drama features actress Ha Ji-won as Hwangjiny, a Joseon period "gisaeng" (female entertainer) who tempted many men with her superb literary talent and breathtaking beauty. Actor Kim Jae-won plays opposite Ha as Kim Jung-han, Hwangjiny's lover.

KBS officials said the drama will picture not only the life of Hwangjiny, but also the lives of gisaeng during the Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910), with detailed 16th-century sets and costumes.

"Hwangjin-i" airs at 10 p.m. every Wednesday and Thursday on KBS 2TV.
