Egyptian TV to Air S. Korean TV Drama "A Jewel in the Palace"

The hit South Korean drama "A Jewel in the Palace" ("Dae Jang Geum"), which helped create the hallyu boom in Asia, will air in the Middle East.

ERTU (Egyptian Radio and Television Union), the Egyptian state-run broadcasting network, announced on Feb. 19 that it will air "A Jewel in the Palace" on its Channel 2.

ERTU's Channel 2 can be watched throughout the Middle East, as the network broadcasts its programs on both terrestrial and satellite waves.

The first episode dubbed in Arabic will air on Feb. 26 at 8:40 p.m. The remaining 50-odd episodes will be broadcast in the same time slot four times a week -- Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Sunday.

Another South Korean TV drama, "Autumn in my Heart", was introduced in Egypt in 2004, and yet another drama, "Winter Sonata", was also broadcast on Channel 2 last year. These two TV dramas captivated the hearts of Arab viewers in the Middle East, including Egypt.

After "Winter Sonata" was aired, the South Korean Embassy to Egypt was inundated with hundreds of fan letters. A "Winter Sonata" fan club consisting mainly of college students was even opened online.

ERTU's broadcasting of "A Jewel in the Palace" ("Dae Jang Geum") was realized when the Korean Overseas Information Service under the Government Information Agency provided the drama to the Egyptian broadcasting network free of charge with the purpose of spreading the hallyu boom in the Middle East.

"We expect that 'A Jewel in the Palace' ("Dae Jang Geum") will leave quite a new and fresh impression on Arab viewers in the Middle East", said Park Jae-yang, a public information officer at the South Korean Embassy to Egypt.
