Entertainer Sin gets travel ban

An overseas travel ban has been imposed on entertainer Shin Jung-hwan, who returned to Korea last week after nearly five months hiding overseas to avoid police questioning over alleged illegalities he committed while gambling in Southeast Asian countries.

The Ministry of Justice confirmed Tuesday that the ban has been imposed since last Friday, two days after his return to Korea. The ban came after police decided not to seek an arrest warrant for the singer-turned-TV personality in the belief he will need consistent medical treatment for a leg injury he sustained on the run. He will soon undergo surgery, officers said.

Sin is suspected of gambling away more than 130 million won ($116,000) at casinos in the Philippines between August and September last year. He is also suspected of having used his passport as collateral for his gambling debt.

Korean law bans the use of a passport as collateral for debt. Violators face up to one year in prison or a 3 million won fine.

Also, those going overseas with more than $10,000 in cash are mandated to report the amount of money to customs or otherwise they can be fined.
