Entertainer Sin returns to face gambling probe

Shin Jung-hwan, 36, a singer-turned-TV personality, returned to Korea, Wednesday, after nearly five months of hiding overseas to avoid police questioning over alleged illegalities he committed while gambling in Cebu, Macao and other Asian countries.
Sin landed at Gimpo International Airport from Japan and appeared before reporters at 11:10 a.m. He was taken to the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency for questioning after leaving a brief message for his fans.
"I felt my five months overseas was like five years. I'm sorry for not being honest and disappointing my fans despite their loyalty. I'm ready for my punishment", he told reporters. "No matter what I say at the moment, it's merely an excuse".
Sin left for Cebu in September last year and has since been suspected of gambling away more than 100 million won ($90,000) at casinos in the Philippines. He is also suspected of having used his passport as collateral for his gambling debt.
Korean law bans the use of a passport as collateral for a debt. Violators face up to one year in prison or 3 million won in fines.
Also, those going overseas with more than $10,000 in cash are mandated to report the amount of money to customs and otherwise can be fined.
Police focused their questioning on how much money he spent gambling overseas and how he secured the alleged money for gambling.
Officials said they would also question him about the large sum of money he used for betting.
Sin has a history of gambling problems.
He was booked for illegal gambling in 2005 and was sued last year for 170 million won in unpaid gambling debts that he incurred at a locals-only casino in Gangwon Province.

귀국한 신정환 도박 관련수사 받게돼
연예인 신정환(36)씨는 필리핀 세부, 마카오 등 아시아 여러 나라에서 도박을 하기 위해 불법행위를 자행한 것과 관련 경찰의 수사를 피해 다섯 달 동안 해외도피 생활을 하다 수요일 귀국했다.
신씨는 일본에서 김포공항을 통해 입국, 11시 10분에 기자들 앞에 섰다. 팬들에게 짧은 메시지를 전한 후 서울경찰청으로 연행되었다.
"5개월이 5년같이 느껴졌습니다. 남자답지 못했고 솔직하지 못한 점 팬 여러분께 죄송하다는 말을 하고 싶고 많은 사랑을 받았는데 실망을 드린 것 같습니다. 앞으로 많이 혼나도록 하겠습니다. 지금은 어떤 얘기를 드려도 다 핑계가 될 것 같다. 잘못한 만큼 혼나도록 하겠다" 라고 짤막하게 심경을 밝혔다.
신씨는 지난 9월 필리핀 세부로 가 카지노에서 1억 여 원을 도박으로 날린 의혹을 받고 있다.
또한 여권을 맡긴 채 자금을 빌려 도박했다는 의혹도 제기되고 있다.
국내법은 여권을 담보로 쓰는 것을 위법행위로 규정하고 있으며 이를 어길 경우 1년 이하의 징역 또는 3백 만원 이하의 벌금형을 받을 수도 있다.
또한, 여행객이 해외로 1만 달러 이상 반출할 경우에는 자금출처 확인을 위해 신고해야 하며 이를 어길 경우 금액에 따라 벌금형을 받을 수 있다.
경찰은 현재 그가 해외에서 도박하는데 얼마를 쓰고 그 자금을 어떻게 확보했는지를 밝히는 데 주력하고 있다.
경찰은 도박 기간과 도박 자금 그리고 그같이 많은 판돈의 성격 등에 대해서도 심문할 예정이라고 밝혔다.
신씨는 도박문제에 연루된 적이 전에도 있었다.
그는 2005년 도박 혐의로 불구속 입건되었으며 2010년 내국인 전용 카지노인 강원랜드에서 도박하며 빌린 돈1억8,000만원을 갚지 않았다며 사기혐의로 피소된 적이 있다.
