Feminists Moviegoers Hand Out Awards to Local Film

According to a recent survey, Hong Sang-soo's "Yoja-nun Namja-ui Miraeda (Woman is the Future of Man)" has been selected as the most dishonorable local film in terms of its depiction of women.

An online survey conducted last week by the Feminist Artist Network gave Hong's latest movie three awards for the misrepresentation or denigration of women.

The film won the Woman as a Puppet Award, meaning the female character is used as a plaything for the male characters, and the Virgin Ideology Award, for a scene in which a woman is raped and her boyfriend gives her a bath to "get her clean". The film also won the Worst Dialogue Award for the same scene when the woman asks her boyfriend, "Am I clean yet? Make me clean".

Other winners include "Silmido", which won two awards in the categories of Divided Women Figures and Justifying Sexual Assault; "Nuguna Pimilun Itda (Everybody Has Secrets)", which won the Dependent Woman Award; and "Orin Sinbu (My Little Bride)" for the Patriarchal Authoritarian Award.

On the other hand, actress Chu Sang-mi won the Somewhat Hopeful Film Award for her role in "Miso (A Smile)", and strangely enough, director Kim Ki-duk, whose films have been notorious for provoking feminists, didn't win any awards this year.

The Feminist Artist Network is the organization behind the Seoul Women's Film Festival and the Anti-Miss Korea ceremony. The Feminist Viewer Film Award ceremony will be held on Nov. 19 at Theater Choo in Seoul.
