Film director Jang Jin to found theatrical company next year

Playwright/film director Jang Jin will set up a theatrical company next year based on his existing troupe Suda. He will also launch a licensing business and introduce previous and new works of his as well as adaptations of foreign plays.

Suda consists of over 20 members, including a number of A-class actors such as Jung Jae-young, Shin Ha-gyoon, Jung Kyu-soo and Lee Yong-i, and a large production crew.

Jang says that through his new theatrical company, he wants to establish a framework to facilitate planning works in the medium to long term, and to combine film with theater.

He also added that Suda, a widely acclaimed brand in Korea, will be in charge of theater plays and performances, while his other firm, Filmitsuda, will take charge of films.

So far, Jang has wrote and produced about a dozen films and plays that have become big hits, such as "Welcome to Dongmakgol", "Taxi Driver" and "Clumsy People". Those productions are enough to create a long-term repertoire, and Jang is considering staging "Welcome to Dongmakgol" next year as a theater play.

Jang is currently looking for a small and medium-sized theater to rent, as securing performance halls for staging so many plays is crucial. "Once we find the theaters, we will start working in full swing on plays that suit the size of our theaters", says Jang.

Jang will likely appoint someone else to take charge of the new theatrical company, as Jang himself is the CEO of Suda and Filmitsuda".
