A festival for independent animation is seeking to give audiences a better understanding of the genre.

These are a few descriptions of Indie-AniFest 2006.
This festival might NOT sound familiar to many as only indie film FANS occupy the seats during screenings.
So what is independent animation ?
RECORDED: "Indie animation is an art form created by individual animators and is not made for commercial purposes. The animation films to be shown at the festival aren't something you can see through the media or at theaters. They're full of the personal ideas, imagination and creativity of the animators".
The festival is the country's only one dedicated to indie animation, which has long struggled with low interest.
SON HEEKYUNG, REPORTER: "The festival is in its second year and aims to encourage more up-and-coming and aspiring independent animation directors to show their productions. Organizers say their ultimate goal is to boost public awareness and knowledge about independent animation in Korea".
Dozens of indie animation fans attended the opening ceremony held in Seoul Friday despite the festival's lack of history.
The ceremony was small in scale, but refreshing.
An indie guitarist-singer gave a short but punchy performance based on the opening film "The Hell".
The movie is about ordinary people living mundane lives, and the human instinct to fear death.
RECORDED: "I'm grateful that my film has been chosen as the festival's opener. I'd like to take this opportunity to really plot positive images about indie animation to visitors and better communicate with them.
The reality is that indie animation is still an unknown field to many".
44 domestic animation films will compete over the festival's five days.
The winner will take home prize money of four million won or more than four thousand dollars.
Several films from home and abroad have been invited, so that audiences can learn the true meaning of indie animation.
