Film 'King and the Clown' sets a new record on March 5

2006/03/07 | Permalink | Source

The film 'The King and the Clown' (director: Lee Joon-ik; Production: Eagle Pictures, Cineworld) has set a new box office record in Korean film history as of 5 PM on Mar. 5.

"Today at 5 PM, the total number of viewers nationwide has surpassed 11.75 million people, thus setting a new box office record in Korean film history". Cinema Service, the official distribution company for 'King and the Clown' made the official announcement. The previous record was 11.74 million viewers set by 'TaeGukGi' in 2004.

As of Mar. 4, the total number of viewers of 'The King and the Clown' was 11,712,074 people, and by 5 PM on Mar. 5, there were 40,000 additional viewers, thus setting this new record. This record has been set a mere 67 days since the film's opening on Dec. 29, 2005 (including the eve of the premiere day).

This new record is even more remarkable for making the accomplishment 33 days less than what 'TaeGukGi' took. In addition, while 'TaeGukGi' took additional 61 days to reach its record after garnering 10 million viewers, the 'King and the Clown' only took 23 days since it reached 10 million viewers.

What is also significant in the film's record is that it broke away with the preconception that historical dramas are hard to make a box office hit, and that this huge success will push forward the Korean film industry to take new and diverse approaches to this genre.

Meanwhile, the 'The King and the Clown' production team - director Lee Joon-ik, actors Jung Jin-young, Kam Woo-sung, Lee Joon-gi, and Kang Sung-yeon - did not hold any special ceremony. Instead, they visited the Seoul Theatre and Daehan Theatre on Mar. 3 to meet audiences and to express their thanks to the fans for helping to set this new record.
