Film to Be Made about Korean Subway Hero

The story of Lee Su-hyun, who was killed by a train while he was trying to help a drunk man in a Tokyo subway station in 2001, is going to be made into a movie. Five representatives from Kinema Tokyo, including chairman Takahashi Matsuo, visited Busan, Lee's hometown, last week. Takahashi discussed the movie with Busan Mayor Huh Nam-shik and asked for support. At the meeting, the chairman said that the movie was a sign of gratitude by the Japanese people, adding that he had received permission from Lee's family to make the movie. Major Huh assured the Japanese side that he would support the making of the film, through the help of the Busan Film Committee.
The movie, titled "Son! Bridge of Life", will be produced with a budget of W2 billion, according to the Japanese production company. The first day of production will coincide with the fourth anniversary of Lee's death, Jan. 26, and the movie is scheduled to be completed by the summer of next year. A director has not yet been hired. The production company also said that it wants to cast Korean actors in the leading roles and although no discussions are underway, they mentioned names like Won Bin or Park Yong-ha, two stars who are popular in Japan.

After first turning down the notion of making a movie out of his son's life, Lee Sung-dae, the father of the deceased, changed his mind after the director convinced him that the film would be a living testament to Lee Su-hyeon's sacrifice.

The tomb of Lee Su-hyun in Busan Youngrak National Park is strewn with flowers from visiting mourners on Sunday. This Oct. 26 is the third anniversary of his death.
