Foreign Dignitaries in Korea Treated to Special Screening of "Taegukgi"

Some 200 foreign dignitaries in Korea and their spouses were treated to a special screening of the local mega blockbuster "Taegukgi" on Wednesday at Seoul's Convention and Exhibition Center. The US$13 million production by filmmaker Kang Je-gyu is the second homegrown movie to draw more than 10 million moviegoers from a population of 48 million in just 39 days after its domestic release.
"Well I'm really impressed with this kind of movie. I never really thought Korea can make a film like this". "Taegukgi" portrays the crossing fates of two brothers forced to fight each other in the Korean War from 1950 to 1953. "The movie showed us the nonsense of war and cruelty and a little part of the Korean history which was very painful".

"It's very moving, a very powerful movie. It's a fantastic movie but terribly sad to show the difference, the conflict within the family and the emotion of it, it must have been horrendous".

The screening was organized by the Foreign Affairs and Trade Ministry as part of promotional efforts".I just wanted to let the members of diplomatic corps an opportunity to understand more and appreciate more of Korean movies and culture and history".

The film's distributor Showbox has already sealed contracts worth W6 billion (US$5 million) to export the war epic to 15 countries including Japan, Germany, and Britain. "Taegukgi" is also soon expected to hit silver screens in France, Italy, as well as Central and South American countries.
