Former Miss Korea Contestant Seol Soo-jin Devoted to Helping Burn Victims

Seol Soo-jin, actress and runner-up for Miss Korea in 1996, has been working for a foundation to support patients with burn injuries since 2011. The foundation provides financial support along with mentoring programs for the patients.

Seol spent many sleepless nights before she decided to accept the offer to work as a representative for the foundation when it was first created.

Her beautiful appearance sometimes served as an obstacle as it made many victims feel more self-conscious about their scars. She found it difficult at first to ask various questions such as how they got burned, what kind of help they need and whether they have any messages to other patients. Those with severe burns on their face often refused to talk at all.

Seol recently earned a master's degree in social welfare from Yonsei University to give the patients more practical help.

"Burn patients have to undergo at least four to five operations or even ten. So many of them face financial difficulties as they often lost their home and job due to the fire", she said. "I hope more people and companies can understand how the patients suffer and reach out to help".

Seol gave birth to her only child after nine years of marriage when she was busy preparing for the opening of the foundation.

"I think god gave this child to me when I started doing good deeds", she said.
