In the 2012 Korea Technology Awards at Seoul`s Shilla Hotel, the ministry picked the smartphone model for the Presidential Prize, the top honor of the night. The awards recognize products with good sales performance and generating massive ripple effects in domestic industry, among technologies and products commercialized after the completion of development after 2011.

The ministry picked 10 winners of the grand, gold and silver prizes as the Top 10 New Technologies of the Year among the 34 products and technologies that were honored.

The Note 2, which was introduced to the world beginning in Korea in September, is the world`s first smartphone to have a screen of 5.5 inches (13.97 centimeters), a high-resolution Super AMOLED screen, and Air View, which allows the user to preview contents simply by bringing the S-Pen close to the screen. The product saw global sales of five million units in November, just two months after launch, and played a critical role in positioning the 5.5-inch screen as a mainstream feature of smartphones.

Other gold prizes went to a high-efficiency and eco-friendly container ship developed by Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering, and an 84-inch TV with ultrahigh resolution by LG Electronics, with both items making the top 10 list of best new products. The Daewoo vessel had a unique technology that not only minimized fuel consumption but also used heat generated during operations to produce electricity. LG Electronics was also the world`s first to achieve mass production of an 84-inch TV with ultrahigh resolution, thus demonstrating the companys high-speed data processing technology.
