SM announced in a press release that the girls' Japanese debut single "Genie", which went on sale in the country yesterday, came in at fifth place on Oricon's daily singles chart up against other popular Japanese artists such as Arashi and GLAY.

SM explained that the album had received about a total 100,000 preorders; 80,000 copies up till the day before its release and additional orders on the day of its release.

The nine-member girl group branched out into the Japanese pop scene in August, holding their debut showcase on August 25 and becoming the first Korean girl group to have ranked in the top 5 slots of the Oricon weekly DVD chart with their DVD "'少女時代到 ~日記念盤~New Beginning of Girls' Generation".

Known as one of the most popular female idols in the country since their debut in 2007, they have produced several hit singles including "Girls' Generation", "Gee", "Oh!" and "Run Devil Run".

Girls' Generation will be promoting "Genie" in Japan and join their fellow SM labelmates for the third stop of the "SMTOWN LIVE '10 WORLD TOUR" in Shanghai on September 11.
