Gov't Plans to Promote Korean Culture in New York

With former Korean foreign minister Ban Ki-moon appointed UN Secretary General, Korea plans to hold various cultural events promoting Korea in New York.

The Culture and Tourism Minister said Thursday that, under the goal of promoting the Korean Wave--or the Korean pop culture craze--in New York, it will work hard to introduce Korean culture there using the New York Korean Culture Center as an axis. Believing that the appointment of Ban as the UN chief will help raise the world's interest in Korean culture, the ministry intends to use New York, where the UN headquarters is located, as a stage to show Korean culture.

Efforts have already begun. On Feb. 16, a concert by Korean musicians was given at the UN headquarters, and a Korean art exhibition has been held at the Permanent Mission of Korea to the UN since December last year. It will continue until this November.

In March, the ministry plans to set up banners bearing Korean traditional patterns in the Broadway and Koreatown areas to promote traditional Korean design. It will also hold an event for wives of diplomats to the UN and consuls working in New York where they can experience cooking Korean food and wearing traditional Korean clothes.

Other planned events include a Korean film festival, Korean food festival, and Korean craft work exhibition. Courses covering aspects of Korean culture such as language, food, clothes, houses, paper, and music will also be established.
