The government will hire 12,000 more public-sector workers within this year and raise the minimum wage to W10,000 by 2020 (US$=W1,123). It will also draw up a plan to fine big companies that employ excessive numbers of temporary or contract workers.

The plans are in line with President Moon Jae-in's election pledges.

The presidential committee tasked with job creation on Thursday said the government will focus on promoting job growth in Moon's first 100 days in office.

The minimum wage, which is currently W6,470 an hour, will be increased by 15.7 percent a year from next year to reach W10,000 by 2020. The government also wants to revise employment laws in June to reduce the current working-hour cap from 68 hours a week to 52.
