[Aisha's Take] How "Crash Course in Romance" Serves as a Breather From All the Tension

The new era of K-Dramas mostly carries a dominant dark theme. There is mystery, drama and tragedy. As much as we love the thrill, we do miss romantic comedies that just one could sit back and relax with. "Crash Course in Romance" is here for that!

"Crash Course in Romance" tells the story of Nam Haeng-seon (Jeon Do-yeon), a single guardian of an abandoned niece and a disabled brother. She has to face the cutthroat world of private education when her niece wishes to join the star-teacher's math course. This star teacher is none other than Choi Chi-yeol (Jung Kyung-ho). Chi-yeol struggles with a stress disorder and is unable to eat or sleep, but what happens when the only meal he gulps down is from Nam Haeng-seon's restaurant?

The drama flows softly, without rushing the storyline yet keeping an entertaining pace. It's filled with heart-warming scenes and floats slightly above the stressors of life.

Although, there is an element of mystery in the drama too and some sadness too. Each and every character has a struggle of their own. The leading character, Haeng-seon, is the head of her family. She was a handball national athlete until she lost her mother in a car accident. She then takes over her restaurant and devotes herself to raising her niece and taking care of her disabled brother. She gives unconditional support and affection to her niece, to the point that she begins to call her 'eomma'. In order to take up the role, she had to sacrifice many joys of her own life. In the drama, she mentions how she wished to date and continue her studies. Yet, nothing gives her more joy than her family.

On the other hand, we have Choi Chi-yeol (Jung Kyung-ho), the star-teacher. His courses are insanely famous and if you get into one of his math classes, you will surely ace the exams. Behind his immense success, lies a man who struggles to eat or sleep. He has a mysterious past that has traumatized him. Viewers revealed that it was related to a female student who ended up taking her own life, but the whole story is yet to be disclosed. Chi-yeol sees light at the end of the tunnel when he is able to stomach food from a certain restaurant. This restaurant belongs to none other than Haeng-seon.

The drama also contains mystery as we find a mysterious man lurking in the drak. He was responsible for taking Chi-yeol's picture with a student and spreading the rumor. He also attacks Haeng-song's restaurant when something crashes against her window. Despite that, the drama continues its joyous melody.

"Crash Course in Romance" airs every Saturday and Sunday. If you haven't tuned in yet, we recommend you to do so.
