Also last September 10, Gwangju Information and Culture Industry Promotion Agency (GITCT, Director: Kim, Young-Ju) launched the Storytelling Academy at the Gwangju Multimedia Arts Center. A project of Gwangju City and GITCT, the Storytelling Academy aims to create professional storytellers who can plan and create cultural contents based on a thorough understanding of the narrative format so as to contribute to the development of the nation's cultural-contents industry.
Despite the importance of storytelling in terms of promoting cultural contents, no systematic and professional storytelling curricula had been offered in Korea prior to this one.
After its opening ceremony, the Storytelling Academy will run two programs. The four-month-long common curriculum from September to November will focus on the basic theories of storytelling, and the special curriculum will offer categorized classes on comics/animation and game. This year, a total of 79 students?29 more than what was originally expected?were admitted into the Academy.
The faculty of the Academy includes 22 of the nation's best storytelling specialists, who are active in the Metropolitan area. The Academy plans to enhance its students' learning by implementing the one-mentor-to-five-students system.
