[HanCinema's Box Office Review] 2015.04.10 ~ 2015.04.12

"Furious 7" retains pole position…

James Wan's "Furious 7" managed to stay in pole position over this past weekend by capturing 42.6% of the box office pie. The frantic action flick added 585K admissions over 818 screens to bring its total tally in Korea to 2.1M ($15.8M). The film, which stars the late Paul Walker alongside a host of Hollywood heroes such as Vin Deiesel, Dwayne Johnson, and Michelle Rodriguez, has thus far amasses over $800 million worldwide.

Lee Byeong-heon-I's comedy "Twenty" was unable to challenge the high-octane hype around Wan's popular piece, but with the additional 293K it scored over the weekend the film has now moves to 2.7M admissions ($19M). "Twenty" captured 20% of the ticket sales, only narrowly outplaying Kang Je-gyu's family drama "Salut D'Amour" in third with its 286K (19%).

"Salut D'Amour" (formerly known as "Long Lives") tells the tale of 'old love' between a market employee (Park Geun-hyung) and a flower store granny named Geum-nim (Youn Yuh-jung). The film opened across 688 screens around the country, and despite having a slight edge on "Twenty" in terms of number of screenings, the film was unable to secure second place.

In fourth fell one of Korea's favourite imports of year, "Kingsman: The Secret Service" starring Colin Firth, Samuel L. Jackson, and Mark Strong. Since its release early February, "Kingsman" has attracted more than 6M filmgoers, and has subsequently grossed more than $45M. Globally, Matthew Vaughn's spy comedy has banked over $392M.

"Revivre", the latest by the prolific filmmaker Im Kwon-taek, entered the fray last week and rose to fifth with 46K admissions (3%). The film is based on the award-winning novel by Kim Hoon and stars Ahn Sung-ki and Kim Gyu-ri as a couple struggling with love in the face of sickness and new attractions.

Damien Chazell's drama "Whiplash" is still with us after a month of money-making in Korea. The film added an additional 35K (2.5%) to its cause over the week to move its bottom line now to $11M (1.5M admissions). In seventh, with about half the support "Whiplash" received, fell Thomas McCarthy's magically realised comedy drama "The Cobbler" starting Adam Sandler. The film opened its Korean account with 17K (1%) across 250 screens, and was tailed by another foreign comedy in the form of "The Rewrite", by director Marc Lawrence, which managed 17K (1%) from 229 screens in week one.

Nine and ten were also new foreign releases. "Yugo & Lala" is a popular Chinese animation and Koreans welcomed the duo with 16K (1%) and ninth place for its first weekend out, while the omnibus American feature, "The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby" (which is broken into three films: "Him", "Her", and "Them) by Ned Benson, rounded out the weekend's top performers with just under 16K (1%) in the kitty.
