[HanCinema's Box Office Review] Korean Weekend Box Office 2012.06.15 ~ 2012.06.17

HanCinema's Korean Box Office Review

(2012.06.15 ~ 2012.06.17)

Another weekend saw the gap close between Kim Dae-seung's erotic historical drama "The Concubine" and Dreamworks' "Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted". The erotic tale of a king and his concubine has Kim Dae-seung's latest remain the choice film for the second week running. Of course, the presence of the alluring Cho Yeo-jeong hasn't hurt its efforts either, as she bears it all once again as viewers are reminded of her sexy scene in the 2010 drama "The Servant". "The Concubine" added 379,579 admissions from the weekend, which puts the film on 1,720,820 admissions since its release on the 6th of this month.

"Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted" has been well received internationally, and Korea's love for most popular animations has not seen this one slip below the radar. Still, it hasn't set the box office a blaze as it has only just pushed past 1 million admissions. Min Gyoo-dong's comedy drama "Everything about my Wife", on the other hand, is closing in on "Dancing Queen" as the forth highest grossing Korean film of 2012. ""Everything about my Wife" has a total now of 3,820,151 admissions, 238,540 of which came from this past weekend. The action heavy "Lockout" makes its entry into the chart with 201,339 admissions; this one stars the no-nonsense Guy Pearce as a wrongly convicted man who has the chance to redeem himself by rescuing the U.S President's daughter (played by Maggi Grace) from a rowdy space prison.

Shin Terra's "Runway Cop" jumps one spot from last weekend, despite only having attracted 145,126 moviegoers, and "Men in Black III" follows whith 135,530. "Men in Black III" currently has 3,231,892 tickets sold and is close to overtaking the popular Korean film "Unbowed" as the sixth highest grossing film in 2012. "Unbowed" earned 3,416,621 admissions during its run but its position will continue to be challenged as the summer hits keep coming it. "Prometheus" may have been a highly anticipated film in the U.S, but its performance thus far in Korea has been a weak one. "Prometheus", along with the new "Batman" film, was flagged as one of the top films to come out of 2012. Korean audiences, however, have not mirrored that enthusiasm, granting it just 801,540 admissions in two weeks.

The iconic Japanese horror film "Sadako" is at number eight with 71,361 admissions. This popular horror film is based on a novel by Koji Suzuki and has come to almost represent Japanese contemporary horror on the international stage. At nine, is the Korea horror "Don't Click", which is down two places from last weekend with 57,245, followed by "The Thing" at ten with 27,912.
