[HanCinema's Digest] Cinema Snippets

2015/06/20 | Permalink

Has South Korean cinema got any long takes worth noting?, LA honours "My Love, Don't Cross That River", KOBIZ touches base with the country's top moviemakers, and is "Snowpiercer" underrated?

The 15 Greatest Long Takes In Cinema History

There has been some stunning and impactful long takes in cinema's world history, lengthy shots that hold our attention and abolish the cut, but for how long? Taste of Cinema records fifteen films that have let the camera roll to riches, fifteen features that payed with time and won, for us. Did any South Korea movies make their list? At least one, to be sure.

"LAFF 2015: 'Out of My Hand', 'Don't Cross That River' win top prizes"

Jin Mo-young's heartfelt documentary, "My Love, Don't Cross That River", was recently honoured at the recently concluded Los Angeles Film Festival. The film won the award for "Best Documentary", which is also the highest grossing South Korean documentary of all time. It has also just been announced the film with be showcased at Moscow Fest.

"Big Names of Korean Cinema to Return behind the Lens"

This is a great feature by Sonia Kil over at KOBIZ. In it, she considers the dominance of foreign features at the box office so far this year (i.e. "Fast & Furious 7", "Avengers: Age of Ultron", "Mad Max: Fury Road", "Jurassic World") and touches base with some of South Korea's top filmmaking talent to see what the country's heavy hitters have planned for the home team. What's Bong Joon-ho working on now? Is Kim Jee-woon busy on brilliance?

"10 Recent Movies Criminally Underrated by Their IMDb Scores"

Another list here from Taste of Cinema, and this time they've spied ten films that they find are woefully misrepresented by the IMDB ratings. One of them, interestingly, is Bong Joon-ho's first English-language film "Snowpiercer". It currently has a "7.0" score, so is it still underrated?
