Read Variety's review of Park Chan-wook's "The Handmaiden", KOBIZ interviews a leading special effects wizard from MAGE-fx, discover what films have been shot on Jeju Island with a cool infographic from KOBIZ, and what can Hollywood learn from modern Korean cinema?

"Cannes Film Review: 'The Handmaiden'"

Park Chan-wook is back in headlines with Cannes 2016 and Variety's Maggie Lee has a review of his latest stunner: "The Handmaiden". The film is based on Sarah Waters' "Fingersmith" and fans and critics are loving it: "Boasting more tangled plots and bodies than an octopus has tentacles, South Korean auteur Park Chan-wook's "The Handmaiden" is a bodice-ripper about a pickpocket who poses as a maid to swindle a sequestered heiress. His first Korean-language fiction feature since 2009's "Thirst", it's sybaritic, cruel and luridly mesmerizing".

"Head of Korean Special Effects Makeup Company, MAGE-fx, SHIN Jae-ho"

KOBIZ recently had a great interview with Shin Jae-ho, head of special effects makeup company, MAGE-fx: "He is one of the most innovative artists in Korea. He has for years applied 3D digital technology to special effects makeup which eventually resulted in a totally digitalized Korean-style animatronics (a character with a robotic device that is animated by electric and electronic power) with its own independent process in Collective Invention. We met with him to take a brief look into the world of special effects makeup..." The more you know!

"Hollywood takes notice as Korean films surf K-culture wave"

South Korea's "cinematic clout", according to the Bangkok Post, is on the rise as the country strongly represents at this year's Cannes film festival: "Leading the pack is director Park Chan-wook, whose period drama "The Handmaiden" - adapted from the British writer Sarah Waters' erotic crime novel "Fingersmith" -- premieres Saturday, one of 21 films competing for the festival's top prize, the Palme d'Or".

"Under the Stars at Blue Night"

KOBIZ has been busy creating neat infographics for us about South Korea films, and in this latest one, you'll discover what films were shot on the beautiful island of Jeju and whereabouts: "Jeju is a beautiful island with mountains, rocks and sea. It is not just travelers and city people dreaming of their second life on Jeju Island where the landscape changes every minute along the seashore. Filmmakers are also visiting Jeju..."
