"Cannes Film Review: 'The Handmaiden'"

Park Chan-wook is back in headlines with Cannes 2016 and Variety's Maggie Lee has a review of his latest stunner: "The Handmaiden". The film is based on Sarah Waters' "Fingersmith" and fans and critics are loving it: "Boasting more tangled plots and bodies than an octopus has tentacles, South Korean auteur Park Chan-wook's "The Handmaiden" is a bodice-ripper about a pickpocket who poses as a maid to swindle a sequestered heiress. His first Korean-language fiction feature since 2009's "Thirst", it's sybaritic, cruel and luridly mesmerizing".

South Korea's "cinematic clout", according to the Bangkok Post, is on the rise as the country strongly represents at this year's Cannes film festival: "Leading the pack is director Park Chan-wook, whose period drama "The Handmaiden" - adapted from the British writer Sarah Waters' erotic crime novel "Fingersmith" -- premieres Saturday, one of 21 films competing for the festival's top prize, the Palme d'Or".
