Pete Wells visits the new Jeju Noodle Bar in New York City for the New York Times and speaks to its founder, Douglas Kim. Wells begins his review by suggesting that New York City's 'ramen scene' could do with a new noodle bar to spice things up. South Koreans consumed around 1.16 billion pounds of ramen last year, yet Korean ramen has not really taken off overseas. "As important as ramyun is to the Korean diet, it is not the kind of culinary tradition that typically draws the attention of American chefs", writes Wells. UK celebrity chef, restaurateur and food critic Gordan Ramsay recently visited Korea and appeared on the local comedy sketch show "Shorterview" with Yang Se Hyung. When asked about his sharp criticisms, which often go viral, Ramsay said he gets "straight to the point. I need to get it off my chest. If it's good I tell you. "THE 10 BEST MAKGEOLLI BARS IN SEOUL"

Makgeolli, a traditional rice-based alcoholic beverage, goes back to the kingdom of Goguryeo, specifically back to the reign of King Dongmyeong of Goguryeo (58 BCE - 19 BCE). The milky beverage fell somewhat out of favour during the late 80s when American liquor flooded the market, but it has been making a sharp comeback in the twenty-first century. "Makgeolli has made a comeback", writes Albert Kim on 10 Magazine, "especially with young Koreans, who prefer its lower alcohol content (6 to 8 percent). Also, the drink's rich texture makes it more filling than soju and reduces the chance of getting the drunchies".
