"A Painter Who Merged Korean Art Traditions with Abstract Expressionism"

As part of a retrospective at the Korea Society, Hyperallergic's Britta Lokting profiles South Korean artist Po Kim (1917-2014). Kim was, according to the New York Times, "an artist with [an] exceptional technical ability and authoritative notions about his visions of the world". He was an influential abstract expressionist who merged American and Korean techniques during the middle of the last century, but despite his incredible works and influence, "Kim's name remains lost to time".

Art imitating life? Believe or not, the above image is actually a painting by South Korean artist Young Sung Kim. Kim takes his inspiration from nature and enjoys painting small animals. His realist works sell for around $10,000. "All I think about is art", Kim said.

"'Couture Korea' at Asian Art Museum, San Francisco"

If you are in San Francisco, you're not going to want to miss the first major exhibition of Korean fashion in the United States to date. Couture Korea will offer "historic and contemporary fashion from Korea and beyond" and runs from November 3 until February 4 at the Asian Art Museum. Vogue profiles Hyuk Oh, a Korean Indie rock star and cutting-edge fashionista. Hyuk is part of the band Hyukph whose sound is "a refreshing counter to the high-octane pop and hip-hop that has dominated the industry until now", writes Monica Kim. "Ever since I was young", said Hyuk, "the musicians I liked had a cool look. Fashion, music, and performing, it all went together for them".
