[HanCinema's Drama Review] "Black" Episode 13

2017/11/25 | Permalink

The puzzle of the past is slowly coming together in "Black" and with Man-ho nearly cornered, the true villain behind it all should be making their grand entrance soon. Ha-ram's fate is unknown, but new clues hint at more powers than seeing the shadows of death. Many different characters and clues come together in what may not be as coincidental a twist of fate as we imagined after all.

After this episode I am more certain than ever that everything is a part of a big plan from the Power Upstairs. Everyone ending up in the same hospital, even Tiffany (Oh Cho-hee) and her daughter, cannot be an accident and it is too unnecessary to be for plot convenience. If the Big Bad is a Reaper, Ha-ram (Go Ara) and Black's (Song Seung-heon) meddling may be the tool to get him.

A Reaper father would explain Leo's (Kim Jae-young) foresight, but we may also have my previously suspected unusual resilience entering the game. Ha-ram's father is being teased as a Reaper once more, since our killer mentions having seen the "neck-flare" before. The latter could also be from Big Bad, but Ha-ram's mother (Kim Jung-young) mentions that she is a child who cannot be claimed by death. Leo's careless behavior and overdosing just add onto this theory.

If Reaper children can see Reapers and are harder to kill, it would explain Upper Management's interest. Rogue Reapers taking on human form do not seem so rare. As for the reason why one would worry over what I am guessing is a sex tape of him with minors, I assume someone clinging onto life would have as much to lose as any human. I just want to see everyone's faces when they discover it has probably been in Joon's (Lee Hyo-je) guitar case all along.

Speaking of whom, I still do not think his death is directly related to the tape. It seems that Clara (Cha Chung-hwa) was the only one thinking Seon-yeong (Song Soo-hyun) had the tape, so it is possible that the higher-ups had no clue. Whether Joon was injured due to an accident or an attempt on his life, his fate and the true culprits behind it have been clear for a while.

There is a lot happening in the series and while the big picture is clearer, there are a lot of loose ends left to be tied. Between this, the romance and the supernatural implications, I am starting to wonder if everything will be neatly concluded or even further explored. I do wish to see more about the true life and death topics here and perhaps Ha-ram's not-death will spark this.

"Black" is directed by Kim Hong-seon-I, written by Choi Ran-I and features Song Seung-heon, Go Ara, Lee El and Kim Dong-jun.
