[HanCinema's Drama Review] "Emergency Couple" Episode 11

Well, the drama's finally come up with something for Ji-hye to do- Ji-hye, the ex-girlfriend doctor of Cheon-soo, in case you've forgotten. Weird factoid for today- Choi Yeo-jin, the actress playing Ji-hye, is actually younger than Song Ji-hyo, who plays Jin-hee. I'm not sure whether this age difference is also intended to be reflected in the characters, but in any event, the fact that Ji-hye can only be in her mid-thirties at the most makes her new plot thread all the stranger.

Here's what we've know about Ji-hye up until now. She spent a lot of time working in the United States, she's a capable doctor, and she still carries a torch for Cheon-soo (probably). I have a lot of trouble reconciling this information with the sudden revelation that she's a single mom. I know it's physically possible, and that there are people who exist that are like this, but it just seems really out of nowhere. My immediate thought was who's taking care of her kid, given that Emergency Room Doctor is about as far from an accomodating profession to working mothers as physically possible.

"Emergency Couple" spends a fair amount of time on this plot hook, but doesn't really do anything with it. So as of yet I'm not really sure what this storyline is supposed to have to do with anything else. The only other main storyline event of real consequence is the building romance between Chang-min and Jin-hee, which seems awfully sudden considering their hostile attitudes toward each other only a few episodes ago.

The comedy is passable, and overall "Emergency Couple" is a fairly decent production right now. It's just hard to reconcile anything that's happening now with anything that's happened up until this point. I can't complain too much, given how much I personally disliked the earlier portions of this drama. At the same time, the drama is not so incredibly amazing that I'm very excited about what's happening. The single mom thing intrigues me, but I don't know if writer Choi Yoon-jung is actually going to do anything there or if the characterization is just random.

There is one pretty good laugh here, even though I'm not sure it was supposed to be read this way. Ah-reum has a little chat with Yong-gyoo, and heaven help me, Yoon Jong-hoon just has the most amazing facial expression. He looks like the saddest little puppy dog. I didn't know adults even could make faces like that. I feel bad laughing at his pain but it's just so cute!
