[HanCinema's Drama Review] "God's Gift - 14 Days" Episode 15

Truths come out and our good guys have to decide what to make of them and how to act upon them. They have to fight their darker sides in order to do what's right - only it's not so easy to figure out what is right and what is wrong.

Dong-chan and Soo-hyeon both have need of the physical evidence proving that Dong-ho wasn't the murderer. They have to battle their own desires as well as the people orchestrating Saet-byeol's kidnapping and Dong-ho's execution. The web of lies and deceptions grows wider, but clearer. Everyone from the president of South Korea down to policemen at the local precinct has been tapped and exploited to hide one major secret: the president's son killed Dong-chan's girlfriend. To cover this secret, the secretary of state has tapped into all sorts of people and used their desires to manipulate them.

This manipulation is what made the layers of mystery work for this show. It is also what made it a little repetitive and convoluted. While manipulating people and their fears works for a mystery crime drama, it works less when there are too many killers and coincidences. Fate and the mystical element tempered a lot of the coincidence, but even so, some of it was too much. Dong-chan was always in the right place at the right time.

I do like that the man who was once the ultimate bad guy, the man with the wrist tattoo, is just a heartbroken, jaded, revenge driven father. He is who Soo-hyeon could become should she lose her daughter. His drive mirrors hers in a wonderful, rather terrifying, parallel.

Saet-byeol isn't just a kidnapping victim or the object of Soo-hyeon's and Dong-chan's fervent mission. In this complicated fabric, she is an independent thread, making her own decisions and changing outcomes. She is clever and selfless and a fully developed character in her own right. She wants to protects her mother and Dong-chan as desperately as they want to protect her.

What was strong about this episode was that the truths have been exposed and yet the tension lives on in the anticipation of how the problems created by those truths will be resolved. What will Soo-hyeon and Dong-chan do with what they know? Thus far, Dong-chan has gone a long way in repairing his relationship with his intellectually disabled brother. The love between the brothers is incredibly poignant.

The truth also allows Soo-hyeon to work together with her selfish husband Ji-hoon in saving their child. He is just as selfish and cowardly as all of the corrupted political officials. He is a reflection of these characters just as the tattooed man is a reflection of Soo-hyeon.

At the end of a very taxing two weeks, we finally get to see what will happen to little Saet-byeol and how Soo-hyeon and Dong-chan will deal with the truths that have been exposed over the fourteen, action-packed days.
