[HanCinema's Drama Review] "God's Quiz Season 4" Episode 4

The format changes slightly this time. Instead of shocking the viewer with explicit images of blood in medical environment, it just implies horrible things have happened to people in a bloody medical environment. The main target of this abuse is a baby. Yes, that's the mildly political territory "God's Quiz Season 4" has decided to take us to this time, and it's about as pleasant as it sounds.

I find myself continually frustrated by just how passable this drama is as entertainment, because it constantly feels like "God's Quiz Season 4" should be something great. I just don't get that general feeling. The entire social politics dynamic of this episode could have been very easily fumbled and turned into awkward moralizing, but the creative team handles it with a decent amount of finesse. They don't make any incredibly meaningful statement, but the drama never takes a turn toward the eye-rollingly bad.

The comedy likewise is a mix of goofy, obvious jokes based on romantic tension. This isn't new material, and if there was a lack of chemistry, it would be very unconvincing. But there is chemistry, and there is good timing, so the drama manages to stay fresh and funny even if it's working with a lot of stock situations. The production values remain good in terms of the casting as well as the general effects.

The mystery, too, unfolds at an excellent pace. We start off with a classic closed room, and the detectives work slowly to unravel the forensic clues which finally gets them to the emotional center- the whole bit with the baby, as well as other elements I'd just as soon not spoil. Also there's that mystery stalker in the background. Don't expect a whole lot of information about that. "God's Quiz Season 4" doesn't seem to be in any hurry to explain what's going on there.

If I had to pick one word to describe this drama, it would be safe. The production department seems to know exactly what they want to do, and they succeed at doing it. At the very least I can see how this drama was extended to three seasons. It is by and large the adventures of Jin-woo and friends as they stumble upon dark bloody cases and unravel the secrets as we watch. It's a decent enough format- goodness knows crime procedurals are popular enough the world over. It's just not a particularly innovative one from a narrtive standpoint. Style, as usual, is another matter.
