[HanCinema's Drama Review] "Master's Sun" Episode 9

When the truth comes out it can be scary. Kang Woo learns Gong-shil's secret and it terrifies him. Joong-won figures out how he truly feels about Gong-shil and that petrifies him. While Kang Woo seems to accept the truth, Joong-won turns away from it - he gets engaged to another woman. It's a nice juxtaposition to explore between the male leads and one that can sustain through the remaining episodes. They need to choose to be courageous and accept fear and change.

They have the choice to be courageous unlike Gong-shil, who is forced to face her fears everyday. Even so, the "safety zone" that Joong-won's touch provides allows Gong-shil to consider change. The truths that ghosts ask her to impart to the living no longer take priority in her life. She now chooses to help the ghosts and to start living her own life outside of fear.

Gong-shil

As Gong-shil finally begins to see life as something good, Joong-won finds himself falling for her and smiling often because of her. He goes out of his way to protect her from scary ghosts and gets very jealous when the guest pianist leans on her to grieve over his dead wife. After learning Gong-shil's secret, the pianist drugs Gong-shil so the spirit of his wife can possess her and plans to take Gong-shil to Paris. Joong-won hears about Gong-shil's strange behavior while at the airport and rushes back to save her. The ghost tempts him with the truth of Gong-shil's feelings for him, but he kisses Gong-shil instead.

It's a significant kiss because only he will remember it and his desperation to make sure that the ghost didn't permanently take over Gong-shil's body. The Hong sisters have a beautiful way of taking expected K-drama gestures and imposing greater meaning on them. The first kiss is not only an expression of love, but now it has become something that physically saves the loved one. That loved one, Gong-shil, won't remember the kiss, which makes it more heartwrenching.

Also, because the kiss was sudden, it forces Joong-won to realize his feelings, as first kisses in K-drama often do. He is not willing to accept them so he takes his business trip to China and comes back with a fiancee, his physical guard against his love for Gong-shil. Now he really can't be her "safety zone" and she can't ask him to be. It's a great dilemma for them as a couple and allows for other players to really come between them: Kang Woo, Yi-ryung, the new fiancee. These other players could interfere before, but now Joong-won is giving them the leeway to do so.

Joong-won and Gong-shil

The mythology "Master's Sun" is becoming scarier. As Gong-shil was warned before, letting a ghost possess her is dangerous. She could lose herself to the ghost forever. The ghost-of-the-day brought this issue to the forefront and it will probably become more important as Hee-joo's true role and purpose in Joong-won's kidnapping is revealed. It's a great twist that Joong-won's love was the culprit and not a victim like him. The Hong sisters keep feeding the viewers misleading information about her. It's a wonderful tease and makes me look forward the the next episodes.
