[HanCinema's Drama Review] "Mother - Drama" Episode 10

Our heroines have been through a long and arduous journey, but the nature of their bond, and the beast stalking them would not remain at bay forever. Hye-na's guilt-ridden escape and the law's discovery of Soo-jin's actions pushes everyone to reveal their honesty enough for the bonds between them to show themselves for how strong and irreplaceable they really are. With Soo-jin and Hye-na officially on the run and in danger, is a happy ending possible?

Hye-na's (Heo Yool) letter and her subsequent skilled escape are truly heartbreaking to witness. This young lady is so resourceful, so smart and so mature beyond her years, yet she carries the purest of perceptions regarding her role in everyone else's woes. A lifetime of neglect, gaslighting and abuse have taught her an unfair and untrue lesson, and "Mother - Drama" portrays her shouldering of all that pain beautifully and tragically.

"Mother - Drama" is as much about parenthood as it is about being a child to a parent, and so it is good to see all the focus on the children under other characters' wings. Jin-hong's (Lee Jae-yoon) love for his mother had been made clear before, but never has it been as raw and tangible as when he reveals her phone, and the fact that he is still the little boy who needs to feel her presence. It is the most subtle, most elegant way of laying his motivation for helping bare; he is someone who knows what true motherhood is worth.

Soo-jin's (Lee Bo-young) own reaching out bears fruit as well, as Yeong-sin's (Lee Hye-young-I) resolve regarding the annulment of adoption is as fragile as her quickly crumbling act when she first announced it. The relationship between the two has been a deciding factor in Soo-jin's life and decisions, and it has been one of the most well-built mother-daughter relationships in the drama, and I would argue in many a creative work that I have witnessed in general. Soo-jin's other family members tackle this issue with respect to her as well.

Detective Chang-geun (Jo Han-chul) is another one currently facing an inner struggle, as every step of his chase for Soo-jin only confirms what he has been feeling throughout this case; that this is an unorthodox and illegal effort at a rescue, rather than a straightforward kidnapping. It is Ja-yeong's (Ko Sung-hee) actions that I once more find rushed through, but her lashing out at Soo-jin to escape her own guilt is typical of her behavior as a guardian.

Perhaps Seol-ak's (Son Sukku) plans soon revealing themselves will be a kick to her stomach so hard, that she can no longer ignore the responsibility she has in all of this. She clearly needs all manner of help, because her search for love and security has denied it from someone she could have received it back from in its absolute most beautiful form. I do not know where Soo-jin and Hye-na's roads lead, but it will always be the same place in their hearts.

"Mother - Drama" is directed by Kim Cheol-gyoo, written by Jeong Seo-kyeong and features Lee Bo-young, Heo Yool, Lee Hye-young-I and Lee Jae-yoon.
