[HanCinema's Drama Review] "Mother - Drama" Episode 15

The time has come for Yeong-sin to exit the stage in "Mother - Drama", but there are matters that need closure, and secrets that she needs to address with her family. While Soo-jin, I-jin and Hyeon-jin face the new information, and the idea of a future without their parent, Hye-na is determined to make another daring trip to her mother. Soo-jin is faced with the terrifying feat of providing Hye-na with strength for a future she may not be in for a while.

I would usually roll my eyes at a barrage of birth secrets like the one in this penultimate episode, but "Mother - Drama" is very bold about the inherently dramatic nature of its bonds. With the only known partner of Yeong-sin (Lee Hye-young-I) having been her first husband, this revelation is less of a surprise, and more of a confirmation of things already suspected. Much like I-jin (Jeon Hye-jin) and Hyeon-jin (Go Bo-gyeol), I come to terms with this information easily.

Yeong-sin has been a beacon of strength and utter devotion to her children. A true matriarch to her family, she has provided the best that she can in every aspect while constantly struggling with her own flaws as a person. A character who has been one of the strongest in the drama deserves her grand exit, and writer Jeong Seo-kyeong provides just that. Death in Korean drama is often sensationalized and handled carelessly. The fact that the emotional impact of this death is not the death itself, but everything around it is a testament to how beautifully it is delivered.

"Mother - Drama" has tackled all manner of motherhood and loving relationships, but Soo-jin (Lee Bo-young) is facing a situation most mothers who are seperated from their children without passing away do not have to tackle. How she handles her unique relationship with legal limitations with Hye-na (Heo Yool) moving forward will shape her child. Everything we experience makes us who we are, and that is also the reason why I have never called Hye-na Yoon-bok in these pieces. She is already shaped by her past, and Soo-jin holds her future.

Armed with the unconditional, purest love from her family, Soo-jin can provide Hye-na with what she needs to live her life, but I do hope that she stresses the possibility of their reunion, as that is something very much doable, and something which will give the little girl strength to move on. Roots are crucial, and Hye-na is currently having to let go of the ones that allowed her to live as the Yoon-bok she has always wanted.

Who she will be by the time she is an adult will also be shaped by the family she may be adopted by. "Mother - Drama" has conveyed Soo-jin and Hye-na's relationship so well, that physical separation will not be a sad ending for the two. It will merely be a time to evolve separately before they can show each other how far they have come once more. I am open to a happier, more fair solution that avoids this separation, but I can let go of "Mother - Drama" in peace either way.

"Mother - Drama" is directed by Kim Cheol-gyoo, written by Jeong Seo-kyeong and features Lee Bo-young, Heo Yool, Lee Hye-young-I and Lee Jae-yoon.
