[HanCinema's Drama Review] "My Love from the Star" Episode 17

Well it's back to normal I guess. The apparent romantic development of the last episode is pretty much replaced by the usual zany antics here. I have to admit I'm a bit disappointed. Yeah a crisis point was pretty clearly identified and it's understandable that these two react badly but come on. If it seems like these two lapse back into old habits at the slightest excuse it's difficult to imagine this relationship has much of a long term future.

It's all right to go back into comedy staples but at this late stage of the drama we really need to be looking into a better climax. When I saw Bae Suzy my immediate thought was that she was another alien who knew Min-joon and was trying to approach him discreetly. That darn shiny halo through me off. Yes it's cute and funny but we could have had this scene ten episodes ago and it would have been about as relevant to the story.

For most of the runtime here I just felt kind of tired. We've seen all of this already. It was a huge relief when we finally got to Hwi-kyeong doing what he needs to do lately, simply because this guy acts a lot more dynamic and interesting. Which is a change of pace compared to the man's usual hesitation. A pity his scenes are all too short, but everything about them is charged, intense, and fun- particularly the tidbits where he interacts with the actual main characters.

As for the other subplots...does this drama even have any subplots? It's kind of strange that we have so many supporting characters but they never really seem to do much of anything. I'd like to see more of that drama within a drama that Song-I is supposed to be filming- the scene last episode where she keeps jumping off the hill was pretty great. But for the most part there's not really anything to lock onto here and get excited about.

I'm disappointed because overall this feels like a step backward. I can't be entertained by Song-I's bumbling antipathy indefinately. There's just not enough context for that. The only real compliment I can offer here is that the drama doesn't significantly derail its own storyline and take a turn for the terrible. We could certainly be doing much worse than this. The problem is we could certainly be doing much better too.
