[HanCinema's Drama Review] "Shopping King Louis" Episode 7

The rooftop incident initiates an investigation and Joong-won's troubles multiply when he takes both Louis/Ji-seong and Bok-sil in. The two men start realizing the love triangle they are in, which of course leads to love rival hijinks. The rooftop incident and Ji-seong's patch-covered run grant him temporary television exposure and finally bring his presence to light for his family. I see all kinds of excitement in our future.

With the help of cute animations, the episode makes it clear that Ji-seong (Seo In-guk) is surrounded by an entourage of servants. Joong-won's (Yoon Sang-hyun) persistence in getting him up and working is something the story needs right now, because it is a character flaw of Ji-seong which needs addressing. Not that Joong-won is a saint, he does it because he likes Bok-sil (Nam Ji-hyun) after all, but he seems to genuinely wish for her to claim her rights, which I can respect.

Ji-seong is clearly bothered by Joong-won's accommodating behavior, because he wants to be strong and mighty for Bok-sil, but cannot figure the way to do it. I imagine the series will continue with the rivalry between the two oblivious suitors, but I do wish to see them mature a little through it and understand how they can both be better people to Bok-sil and everyone else. A story of people who mature through their relationships, romantic and other, is always welcome.

The series has shown promise in that regard with many of its characters already. Even In-seong (Oh Dae-hwan) and Geum-ja (Hwang Young-hee) have become better people throughout the series and face our duo with more honesty. The progress of Jae-sook (Yoon Yoo-sun) from someone taking orders to someone gloating over her inadvertently heroic accomplishment is a nice touch, as much as it is an inconvenient one for her power-hungry husband and daughter.

Speaking of that, I like a Ma-ri (Lim Se-mi) who worries about Ji-seong's health despite wanting his fortune, because it is a nice break from the monstrous villains we often get in dramas. Even her father, Seon-goo (Kim Kyu-chul) is less ominous now. We have never seen him give a direct order to kill, so could we have a misunderstood antagonist? I will keep my hopes low, but I would love that.

As for the serial killer, it might be someone we know, although I do not find this subplot necessary. Much like the other scares we have had, it is a plot device to get things moving. I cannot complain about it when it does its job, but we have a romance to get to, which will surely have its own share of drama and maybe a brooding bubble bath or two.

"Shopping King Louis" is directed by Lee Sang-yeob-I, written by Oh Ji-yeong-I and features Seo In-guk, Nam Ji-yeon, Yoon Sang-hyun and Lim Se-mi.
