[HanCinema's Drama Review] "The Ghost Detective" Episodes 11-12

There is a lot to unpack in episodes eleven and twelve of "The Ghost Detective", as we have new characters and new revelations piling up on top of fast-paced developments. Da-il and Yeo-wool learn more about their abilities, but that knowledge comes with burdens they might not be ready to bear. How far can our heroes and their friends go to protect one another and everyone out there facing such a formidable enemy?

The episodes give us plenty of plot progression, with the biggest focus being the turning point in Da-il's (Choi Daniel) nature as a ghost, and Yeo-wool's (Park Eun-bin) nature as someone fated to vanquish this specific spirit. While the revelations are entertaining, it is the changes in the priorities of both characters that I find more appealing. Da-il and Yeo-wool want to protect each other, but they are doing it at the cost of safety and success.

This is a really great way to show that Dramaland's famed noble idiocy might feel romantic, but it is actually a downgrade in a relationship, and a sign of one's declining well-being. The episodes show us the dire consequences of bearing the weight of the world alone, rather than accepting help, and respecting the right of others to make decisions on their own fate. This ties into the obvious themes of trauma and suicide that we see throughout the drama.

Its pitfalls are also portrayed through the more extreme relationship between Jeon Deok-joong (Jeon Bae-soo) and Seonwoo Hye (Lee Ji-ah). His negligence led to a traumatized child succumbing to a terrible illness, while his selfishly manifested guilt, and misguided care are sinking her further into a hell created by others, and developed by herself. His own noble idiocy has turned him into a criminal psychologically dependent on his ghostly abuser.

The episodes develop Chae-won's (Lee Joo-young) backstory further as well, which includes our new spirit character, solidifying their existence. This is the first time we see an entity aside from Da-il and Hye who is not a hallucination. I am also curious to see if Chief Sim (Kim Min-sang), and our newly introduced Kang Eun-chong (Yoo Su-bin), who seems to have some form of attachment to Da-il, will play a bigger role here.

The whereabouts of Da-il's body are still on the mystery table, but his current condition is far more important. What did he have to do in order to get these abilities in such a short amount of time? Also, what is this mysterious foundation that has been supporting Deok-joong and Hye, and how has this guardian come to know so much about the spirit world? I am looking forward to discovering where the cliffhanger leaves Da-il, Yeo-wool and Hye.

"The Ghost Detective" is directed by Lee Jae-hoon-II, written by Han Ji-wan-I, and features Choi Daniel, Park Eun-bin, Lee Ji-ah and Kim Won-hae.
