[HanCinema's Drama Review] "The Ghost Detective" Episodes 9-10

I am fully invested in this whirlwind mystery that is "The Ghost Detective", as the series goes deeper into what now feels like a big web of connected lives and deaths. Da-il is discovering new abilities and dangers, Team Good is now complete, a new character seems to hold vital information, and with a hint of romance being created, our two heroes are about to meet new challenges.

We finally have more ghostly rules explained by Chae-won (Lee Joo-young), including Da-il's (Choi Daniel) door conundrum. More importantly, we now know that he can affect the Woman in Red, henceforth known as Seonwoo Hye (Lee Ji-ah). At the same time, his endangered sanity when giving into these intense emotions provides added suspense. Sadly, his lack of time restrictions is also putting another nail on his probably real coffin.

This brings me to what I feel may be the introduction of a love line, and what this could mean for him and Yeo-wool (Park Eun-bin). If he is really dead, how would this work out? I doubt such a series would kill its heroine and have them wander together, depending on shamans and the like. Why create a romance that is doomed to begin with? If they follow through with this teasing, it may provide the only true hope that our hero is alive.

The great thing about "The Ghost Detective" is that it leaves a lot of room for different outcomes. Whether dead or alive, Da-il could still operate on rules Chae-won does not know, especially if someone is using him as an experiment, or to stop Hye. The phantom limb element explains pain, but could be misleading, and the heartbeat we hear when he is in pain could be a clue, or just a sound effect for emphasis on that pain.

There are bigger issues at hand, however, and the introduction of Kim Gyeol (Shin Jae-ha) is one. The young man disappeared until recently, and he clearly knows what is going on. We know that Hye has been in a coma since childhood, and since Gyeol and Yeo-wool are called "children" by the Orderly (Jeon Bae-soo), it means they share a past with Hye somehow. Everyone seems connected here.

Even Sang-seop (Kim Won-hae) has a suspicious past now. Who did he want to release from suffering, and could he also be connected to our heroes since then? We never did find out how he discovered Da-il. Could him talking about Da-il's youth have been the truth hidden in a comedic moment? I hope that he and his two kiddos get a happy ending, because I love these characters as much as the mystery.

"The Ghost Detective" is directed by Lee Jae-hoon-II, written by Han Ji-wan-I, and features Choi Daniel, Park Eun-bin, Lee Ji-ah and Kim Won-hae.
