[HanCinema's Drama Review] "Triangle - Drama" Episode 17

And now this is a revenge drama. Granted, we always knew that Dong-soo had a specific grudge against Bok-tae, but for the most part Dong-soo has been pretty good about having that just be one bullet point on the giant list of terrible things Bok-tae does on a daily basis. This opening of this episode clearly demonstrates, though, that it's what Bok-tae did to Dong-soo's family that really makes him a bad man. The other criminal enterprise stuff not so much. Dong-soo only just recovered from an assassination attempt and that on its own was apparently not a good reason for revenge.

What's worse is that now this is Yeong-dal's motivation too. The guy has so many good reasons to fight against Bok-tae at this point yet it's the biological plot twist out of nowhere that ends up being the really important one. Yes I know it's not literally out of nowhere- the entire premise of the drama is that these three are brothers and are unaware of it. The trouble is the story would make just as much sense without that particular plot thread.

For the moment, all the premise does is create a painfully obvious spoiler. At some point, someone is going to figure out that Yang-ha is the third brother, and he will most likely betray his adoptive family and Bok-tae in order to help his brothers out at the last minute. That's not necessarily exactly what's going to happen- variation is to be expected. Right now, though, Yang-ha is a de facto villain, and it's difficult to gauge his relationship to everything that's going to happen knowing, as we do, that this drama bomb is going to pop up eventually.

Jeong-hee continues to be far more overdramatic than is appropriate, although that's nothing new. What's odd here is that Yeong-dal is now in a superior position to her, much like Yang-ha, and, I don't know, I guess I was expecting that to be important somehow. Jeong-hee's main character trait has been a desire to do a good job and help her family deal with money trouble. Yeong-dal jumping to the top of the line for (from her perspective) no apparent reason really should put some kind of damper on that.

There's very little about this drama right now that's at all likable. The conceit is being wasted, character motivations are becoming increasingly simplistic with each passing episode, and there hasn't even been much action lately. Just some gambling, a fight, something would be really nice. The melodrama is getting intolerable and needs to be balanced out somehow.
