[HanCinema's Drama Review] "Triangle - Drama" Episode 6

Last episode Yeong-dal's crazy scheme exploded right in his face. This episode, undeterred, he continues to come up with more terrible ideas. Yeong-dal really does not have the slightest clue. The guy genuinely believes he's at the center of this story where destiny is going to be made. The shame of it all is that Yeong-dal's got decent enough charisma. There's so many good things he could be doing with that. But Yeong-dal chooses to to buttress his pride and act like a gangster instead.

Unreasonable pride is the main calling card of "Triangle - Drama", and it's only accentuated by the fact that none of our three leads even have anything to be proud about. They could all conceivably be happy just dedicating their energy into something useful- Dong-soo's constant marital troubles are an obvious case of a marriage that could probably be salvaged if the members would just make more of an effort.

This becomes even more obvious when the supporting characters are taken into account. They're all just so genuinely happy living life and doing fun stuff together. Yeong-dal manages to get together a huge posse of dudes who are totally cool with just hanging out by the river and having a barbecue, and rather than doing something fun with this ability he just uses it to further another one of his terrible ideas.

The love triangle between Yeong-dal, Yang-ha, and Jeong-hee is particularly troublesome in this context. I can't see how this could possibly go well for Jeong-hee. Yeong-dal is insisting on doing battle with gangsters for no good reason, and Yang-ha simply can't be trusted. He's rich. She's not. Yeah the guy might be acting nice now but we know better than that. The time will come when he gets bored and then she'll be the one left picking up the pieces. A tendency toward unnecessary drama runs in the bloodline of the Jang brothers.

Unfortunately this episode runs into the same problems most of them do- it's good at sustaining attention for awhile, and there's lot of decent character study here. But sooner or later the more exciting plot driven action dies now and we get people talking about the things that they're going to do later, or the plans they're making now that aren't going to matter next episode because life hates plans. Still, to anyone who's been able to tolerate that scripting so far, on balance this episode's pretty decent.
