[HanCinema's Drama Review] "Triangle - Drama" Episode 7

Until this episode I don't think I fully appreciated how many characters there really are running around here and how surprisingly interconnected everyone is. This isn't really a recap episode, but it's an excellent one to watch if you want to get a hold of how they're all related to each other. Nearly all of them have some sort of direct personal or business relationship with at least two other characters directly and clearly defined.

It's an interesting conceit taken in concert with the drama's core concept- these three men are brothers, but they don't know it. This is a pretty outrageous coincidence, they're meeting again like this, but is that really any more convoluted than finding out that all these other apparently unrelated characters have these other connections? I'm starting to get a sense of why so little progress is made in the plot. These relationships are so efficiently bolstered that any serious attempt to change the status quo runs up against way more resistance than meets the eye.

Yang-ha is in the unfortunate position of being the first character to realize this, and the revelation really does a number on him. All of a sudden Yang-ha's familial and romantic subplots feel awfully underwhelming considering all the high level bad stuff. Of course, simply being aware of the reality of the situation is no help in improving the situation. So Yang-ha goes surly, determined to solve his problems through acting out again. I can't blame him, given the lack of other options.

Yeong-dal is a different story, though. His cockamamie scheme to get in good graces with the boss goes about as well as can be expected. It's somewhat unclear how much Dong-soo really knows about the overall situation, making for a very weird scene where murder and slapstick are present simultaneously, yet it all somehow works out in broad form.

I credit this mainly to the way each character is viewing the story. Taken on the personal level, everyone in this drama thinks they're the lead role in a different kind of genre film. The conflict, from our point of view, is that they really aren't. That's what makes the confrontation at the cliffhanger have such an odd feeling. For these two characters, this is an epic throwdown that will decide destiny. But to us watching the drama, who have already seen this scene play out rather uninspiredly once before, and who know "Triangle - Drama" has plenty of episodes left go...well, it's harder to say, really.
