[HanCinema's Drama Review] "Voice" Episode 2

"Voice" definitely relies most on the wrenching of emotions to hook its audience and the highly emotional moments are definitely where it is strongest. It sinks its airtime into the sensational whether it be a current case or an angry Jang Hyuk.

What makes me most disappointed about this episode is how gimmicky all of the characters feel. They fit such stereotypical molds of the jaded and downtrodden that it is difficult to see them as people rather than stereotypes. Jin-hyeok is a down-on-his-luck cop with a bad temper and who also has an ill son. He is opposed to the changes being made in his department. Nothing about this setup or in Jang's portrayal is unusual. Kwon-joo is a stiff woman in a what is considered a "man's job". She struggles to bring about change and earn the forgiveness of Jin-hyeok. I do like that she fights to be heard in a department where others choose to deny the importance of emergency responders. Nothing in Lee's portrayal is inspiring, however.

The case is amazing. It is where the meat of the drama lies. As soon as the lights start flashing, cops start running, and victims are shown, the pace picks up. It is quick and intriguing and the two cases this week have been engaging. It would be nice to have more out of the characters themselves besides their back sob stories. There is a distinct lack of heart in the shared story of the main characters that I hope develops as the weeks march on.

"Voice" is directed by Kim Hong-seon-I, written by Ma Jin-won and features Jang Hyuk, Lee Ha-na, Baek Sung-hyun and Yesung.
