[HanCinema's Drama Review] "Woman with a Suitcase" Episode 12

No sooner than Geum-joo passes her first exam and is well on her road to being a lawyer than she is given the huge challenge of defending Bok-geo, investigating Min-ah's case, and learning the huge difference between being a brilliant woman behind the scenes and one who stands up in a court room.

Although the legal aspect of the show is exciting, it is also somewhat contrived. Oh Sung has its fingers so entrenched into everything that our characters do that it is getting hoaky. Her sister, Hye-joo, is completely bought by the chaebol family and its series of illegal happenings. Bok-geo is jailed and Golden Tree is manipulated by the sheer political and financial power of Oh Sung. Not to mention the legal proceedings themselves are quite dubious. Those of you watching who are in the legal profession must take this, as with other dramas that focus on professions, with a (boulder-sized) grain of salt.

With that said, this show is now about the little people fighting the good fight as they punch and kick their way to the top. Rather than focus on Geum-joo's battle with Oh Sung and how they're manipulating the system to prevent her from attaining her lawyer's license, I'd like to see her take her new position and fight more than the one battle with Oh Sung. I want to see her reaching out and helping her clients directly in the courtroom, learning and growing. Instead she's ensnared by Oh Sung.

Also, the romance is so lackluster. Skipping two years was a very shaky decision on the part of the drama. The two had weak chemistry to begin with and throwing in the time gap and the jail time weakens it further. I also miss the friendship that was so fun and engaging between Seok-woo and Geum-joo. Their relationship is close, but its characterization onscreen is lukewarm at best.

And Hye-joo just keeps getting the short end of the stick and when she does, she always makes the wrong decision. It's becoming more and more difficult to relate to her. Waning relationships seem to be more relevant to the show at times than the legal proceedings, and this isn't good. Come on, show. Pick up the pace!
