[HanCinema's Drama Review] "You're Surrounded" Episode 9

The truth is out and although it's couched in lies, Pan-seok and Soo-seon now know Dae-goo's identity. The reveal of the truth gives the three characters some lovely turning points and allows the actors to shine. In general, "You're Surrounded" has found it's stride in delivering the messages it sets out to send.

While situations that send these messages may not be tied up as realistically as they could be, they are still satisfying in their conclusions. Ji Gook and Tae-il were in a fight that mirrored the case they were working on. Two brothers blamed each other for the death of the father, and the blame actually laid equally on both shoulders. The same held true for Ji Gook and Tae-il who needed the stark circumstances of the case and of a dangerous situation to force them to realize the importance of their friendship. There is not enough time to fight over the little things.

This episode did an excellent job of developing Dae-goo. It delved into his past, revealed that Chief Jang was his support system, but that he was still lonely. It makes his crush on Soo-seon more endearing because he craves the affection and attention she showers upon him, the things he missed growing up despite having Jang. His feelings for her make her relief upon learning that he is her long lost friend even more poignant. That relief affects him strongly and draws him closer to truly feeling something other than anger and hurt. His revenge is turning out to be a journey of regaining himself and learning to enjoy relationships and love.

Like Soo-seon, Pan-seok dug into Dae-goo's past, suspecting his real identity to be Kim Ji-yong, the teenager who lost his mother and then disappeared. He was presumed dead and that had haunted Pan-seok. Some of the best acting Cha Seung-won has ever done is in the scene where he lays eyes on Dae-goo/Ji-yong. His eyes fill with tears of relief that the boy didn't die. His entire body relaxes as the burden of Ji-yong's lost life lifts from him because that life is not, in fact, lost. It's a beautiful moment that is later mirrored when Soo-seon expresses her gratitude towards Dae-goo for being alive.

As the detectives' relationships smooth out, the real mystery behind the murder of Dae-goo's mother starts to amp up. The detectives have united just in time to protect Dae-goo from his dark past. I hope that the show keeps the balance it has established between humor, police work, and the mystery as we venture into its second half.
