Korean Weekend Box Office (2011.04.29~2011.05.01)

It is no surprise that Kenneth Branagh's long anticipated "Thor" stands strong at number one this week. Based on the popular Marvel comic character, this American superhero film finally makes its way to the big screen with 543,075 admissions in its opening week. Children's Day is coming up this week in Korea and you can expect "Thor" and "Fast Five" to continue their success at the top.

"Fast Five" has proven to be one of the best in the series, enjoying its biggest opening in the US. The film was justifiable dislodged from the top spot but is having some pull as it nears the million admissions mark. Although the big America hits currently hold the top two spots, there are a spew of Korean films that are also enjoying success this week. "Suicide Forecast" sold 138,039 tickets and "Clash of the Families" was close behind with 131,922. Make sure to read HanCinema's review of "Clash of the Families".

"In Love and the War" is Park Geon-yong's second major feature, his first being "Bronze Medalist" released back in 2009. This comedy war-drama is set just after the start of the Korean War in 1950. When North Korean troops move into a small Korean village, the villagers have to struggle to appease them. Amongst all this lovers must find away to stay together and eventually a friendship develops between the villagers and the occupying troops. "The Last Blossom" has slipped from last week's number four to six. The falloff for this week's top ten starts here with "The Last Blossom", attracting just 53,848 moviegoers. At number seven is the Korean film "Sunny - 2010", a fun story about a group of women and the search for their high school friends. The film is directed by Kang Hyeong-cheol and stars Yoo Ho-jung, Kim Min-young, Go Soo-hee, Jin Hee-kyung, and Shim Eun-kyung.

The action comedy "The Apprehenders" is at eight. Two cops battle each other to bring down a suspect and in doing so gain the title of "The Apprehender". Bruce Beresford's 2009 film "Mao's Last Dancer" is at nine with just 19,254 admissions and the animation film "Gnomeo and Juliet" is hanging in there at ten.
