Korean Weekend Box Office (2011.05-27~2011.05.29)

DreamWorks Animation's "Kung Fu Panda 2" was never in doubt for being a huge success in Korea. The sequel is strongly at number one this week, claiming some 1,502,952 admissions in its opening weekend. Director Jennifer Yuh Nelson immigrated to America when she was 4 and her success on this project is getting her talent and story skills noticed!

Last week's number one "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides" had to take an admissions cut this weekend, attracting 573,295 people to the theatres from last weekends 1,206,519. Although Hollywood may have a firm grip on the top two, the Korean hit "Sunny - 2010" is continuing its glory run at number three. The film is getting a lot of publicity as it nears 3.5 million admissions. "Head" is a new Korea film in the charts this week. Director Cho Un brings us an action thriller that follows a reporter as she gets caught in a dangerous ring that traffics human organs. This is Cho Un first feature film and she was previously involved in the editing department on "Save the Green Planet" back in 2003.

"The Lost Bladesman" drops one position from last week as it sells just 16,134 tickets to stick around at number five. At number six is the America film "Source Code" which has a respectable 1,277,263 admissions in total. The third Korean film in the top ten is "The Apprehenders" as it to finds itself slip one place from the last week. This Korean action comedy sold 12,400 tickets and is creeping towards the million mark.

The last three films on the chart this weekend are all Korea. Choi Ik-hwan's directorial drama "Mama" is an omnibus film about three mothers and their offspring. At number nine is Park Kwang-woo's "The Cane" which is down from its opening week's position of six. Finally at number ten is another Korean omnibus drama "Sorry, Thanks". This film is comprised of four short stories by different Korean directors about the relationship between humans and their pets.
