[HanCinema's Film Review] Korean Weekend Box Office 2011.12.23 ~ 2011.12.25

 HanCinema's Korean Box Office Review

(2011.12.23 ~ 2011.12.25)

The Christmas weekend in Korea placed "Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol" at the top with 1,230,676 admissions, holding 34.6% of the total tickets sales with 881 screenings. Tom Cruise's latest film has blasted its way into number nine of the highest grossing films in Korea for 2011 with a total of 3,677,069 admissions. The blockbusters battled it out this weekend but the kids had their say to with a spew of foreign films catching their fancy.

Kang Je-gyu's much-anticipated wart epic "My Way" follows with a solid 770,220. It's not the most Christmassy of movies and its hype has seen the numbers come in for it so far, but we will have to see if some its earlier criticisms will impact on the film's long term success. The next Sherlock films is out here in the form of "Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows". It's sure to put in a good performance with its light action and comedy that always sit well with moviegoers. It has had 517,421 admissions thus far. Brad Pitt's "Money Ball" isn't the only baseball movie out as Park Hee-gon's "Perfect Game" captures one of Korea's favourite pastimes. "Perfect Game" tells of a famous game that took place in Korea in 1987 between the Lotte Giants and the Haitai Tigers. It has currently has a total of 473,088 admissions.

The only other Korean film in the top ten is "Spellbound" by Hwang In-ho. The film is down from last week's number two to this weeks five, holding just 5.2 % of the total ticket sales with 385 screenings. "Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chip-Wrecked" is next at number six with 162,953 followed by the first of two Pokémon films "Pokémon the Movie: White - Victini and Zekrom".

As if one Pokémon wasn't enough "Pokémon the Movie: Black - Victini and Reshiram" is there with 113,229 admissions keeping the kids full of choice over Christmas. "The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn" has plummeted from four to this week's nine with just 39,870 admissions and last is "Arthur Christmas" cashing in on the Christmas fever with 31,682.
