The third film in Christopher Nolan's Batman series has arrived in Korea and was welcomed by a massive reception of 1,992,257 admissions! "The Dark Knight Rises" was flagged to challenge the likes of Marvel's "The Avengers" for the 2012 crown; But despite this amazing admissions count, can "The Dark Knight Rises" continue with this first weekend momentum all the way to the top? In the face of Mr. Nolan's much anticipated blockbuster, Park Jeong-woo's "Deranged" was convincingly shoved off the podium; claiming just 15.70% (494,866) of the total tickets sales at the weekend.
The Korean disaster film "Deranged" may have been dethroned, but it's total admissions count of 4,173,147 is good enough to place it as the third highest grossing Korean film of 2012. Only "Nameless Gangster" (4,683,598) and "Everything about my Wife" (4,587,489) stand above it in that chart, with "Architecture 101" (4,106,633) and "Dancing Queen" (4,010,624) close behind. The Japenese animation "Detective Conan The Eleventh Striker" is a surprise number three. The "Detective Conan" series has always been popular in Korea, and the kids have rallied behind this lastest one to place it at soldily at third. With 189,849 admissions, "The Amazing Spiderman" holds down fourth; its the second superhero film out of Hollywood to really cash-in here in Korea. "The Amazing Spiderman" is now the second highest grossing film released in Korea for the year with 4,779,455 admissions and counting.
Kim Ik-ro's "A Millionaire on the Run" was released on the last week, along with its more successful debutants "The Dark Knight Rises" and "Detective Conan The Eleventh Striker". "A Millionaire on the Run" is Kim's first directorial effort, he was previously the assistant director for "Singles" and "Doll Master". "A Millionaire on the Run" has earned 79,796 admissions so far, and stars J.Y. Park, Cho Seong-ha, Min Hyo-rin and Jo Hee-bong. "Two Moons" is next, falling three places from last weekends three. Kim Dong-bin's latest is struggling to breach 500,000 admissions, and was only able to add 59,413 (1.8%) to its new total admissions count of 398,601. "A Letter to Momo" is also tripping at number seven, it managed to clear just 294,123 since its release earlier this month.
"Midnight in Paris" has been in the top ten for three weeks now and has thus amassed 268,112, the film has occupied positions 6th, 7th, and now 8th is what has been a rather uneventful performance here in Korea. Finally at number nine is third installment of the popular animation series "Madagascar 3" (11,372 and 0.40%), followed by this week's number ten "Dangerously Excited" which tumbles from its entry position of four last week.
