[HanCinema's Film Review] Korean Weekend Box Office 2012.12.07 ~ 2012.12.09

HanCinema's Korean Box Office Review

(2012.12.07 ~ 2012.12.09)

Jo Geun-hyeon's drama "26 Years" managed to hold onto another first place position at the box office this past weekend. Heun-hyeon's latest entered the chart at the end of last month where it was the choice film with almost 700,000 admissions. Its second week almost matched that performance with 606,882, putting it on a total admission count of 1,815,882. In addition to Geun-hyeon's "26 Years", the romantic comedy "Whatcha Wearin'?" was released along with the new and improved "Dredd 3D".

"Whatcha Wearin'?" is a romantic comedy by director Byun Sung-Hyun, his second film since "The Beat Goes on" in 2010. The film stars Ji Sung and Kim Ah-joong and captured 473,529 admissions in its opening weekend spell in Korea. "Rise of the Guardians" slipped to three with 258,352, but the big foreign animation has yet to breach the million admissions mark with Korean audiences. Jo Sung-hee's "A Werewolf Boy - Extended" may have been the top film two weeks ago but it only managed to fourth (164,554) this past weekend as it went up against fresh and compelling local competition.

"Breaking Dawn Part 2" fell one place to settle at number five. This is the film's fourth week out in Korea, but since its release on the 15th of last month it has not been able to push past second place. This weekend the film managed just 104,602 to its new total of 2,578,609. At number six is Jung Byung-gil's "Confession of Murder" with 95,264 tickets sold over December's first weekend. Kim Jin-young's "Tone-Deaf Clinic" has not had a memorable time since its release three weeks ago. "Tone-Deaf Clinic" is Kim's fourth film to date, his last being the 2010 comedy "Clash of the Families" which itself grossed around 2.5 million admissions.

Amazingly, Choo Chang-min's "Masquerade" is still here after 13 weeks! It added 32,353 to its record-breaking efforts of 12,227,305 and still managed to outshine Kim Yong-han's drama "Don't Cry Mommy" which only scored 26,550 and has yet to break the million admissions mark. At number ten is the "Dredd 3D" which snuck into the top ten with 26,402.
