[HanCinema's News] "Aloners" Tops Early Reservations for South Korean Films

According to figures released by the Korean Box Office Information System (KOBIS), "Aloners" is leading all other South Korean film going into its domestic release on May 19th. The news is welcome for the independent film which premiered at JIFF in late April. "Aloners" will be the first film from the 2021 iteration of the festival to see a domestic release. You can read my review of it here.

The extent of the accomplishment should not be overstated as there is only one other new South Korean release this week. That would be the Buddhist documentary "Like a Lion Not Surprised by the Sound" which has an even more hyper-specialized target audience than "Aloners" does. Neither of these movies, nor any other foreign release for that matter, are expected to provide anything but token resistance to the latest Fast and the Furious movie which also opens in South Korea this week.
